Contract interiors specialist Gradus has supplied and fitted a complete wall protection system at a new £multi-million healthcare facility in Peterborough, creating an easy-to-maintain and hygienic environment.

Part of the £355million Greater Peterborough Health Investment Project, which will see three major new healthcare facilities built in the city, the Peterborough City Care Centre (CCC) brings together a number of services for health & social needs. The £25million centre features a 34 bed inpatient Intermediate Care and Intensive Rehabilitation unit, Outpatient diagnostic and treatment centre, Integrated Child and Young Person’s centre with a specialist inpatient Children’s Respite care unit, Walk-in Centre with GP Out of Hours service, Imaging department with x-ray and ultrasound facilities, Pharmacy and an administration department to support all of the services within the building.

The wall protection system from Gradus was installed throughout the centre’s corridors and units to protect the attractive new décor from impact and abrasion caused by pedestrian and wheeled traffic, while helping to prevent the build up of germs and bacteria in damaged surfaces.

The system includes 700 wall guards and 1300 wall guards that offer superior wall protection in terms of height and depth; bed locators that stabilise the bed in a fixed position to enable medical equipment to be hooked up quickly and easily; high impact corner guards to protect the corridors’ most vulnerable areas and scratch and stain resistant Armaclad strips, all supplied in Dolphin (grey). In addition, Gradus’ new Stainless Steel handrail was also installed in the centre’s corridors, details of which can be found in the latest wall protection catalogue.

Specifically designed for use in healthcare environments, in line with guidance set out in the NHS Estates Health Technical Memorandum 69, 3500 PVC-u dual rails were also supplied. These combine a wall guard and handrail in one profile and were supplied in Dolphin (grey) and Admiral (dark blue). The colours were chosen to complement the centre’s modern décor and provide a strong visual contrast with the blue and cream walls, making them easy to locate. This improves accessibility for the visually impaired and helps to create an inclusive environment, in line with Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) guidelines.

The City Care Centre General Manager has commented: “NHS Peterborough is delighted with the improvements being made to Peterborough’s healthcare provision and the City Care Centre is key to this, as it can adapt to the needs of the local community. Any product installed at the centre had to contribute toward its cleanliness and appearance. The wall protection system from Gradus ticks both boxes, as well as helping to reduce annual repair and maintenance costs.
“It was a real bonus working with a company that has a long history of supplying and fitting products for large healthcare projects, as they were able to deliver on time and on budget.”

Lynette Bowden, Group Marketing Manager for Gradus, comments: “We are pleased to have supplied and installed such a comprehensive range of products for a centre that will really benefit the local community. Our wall protection systems provide specifiers with a solution for every area of the building, and thanks to our vast experience in the healthcare sector, many of our products are specifically developed for these types of environments.”
